If you ever go to Mahabalipuram, please go to this place (I wrote the name in a book left in Mumbai but as soon as I get it back, I tell you, cause it was really good) and not to the places adviced in your guides. We also tried those, but were really disappointed.
--> A good rule to choose a restaurant: check where the tourists are and where the Indians are, and if you want good local food follow the Indians ;)
And if you're scared of hygiene problems, well, tourists places are not necessarily cleaner, so make your choice :P
